Trends 2023 What’s In: Dark Wood

Loud and chaotic – that’s how more and more people feel about our time. Accordingly, our own four walls function as a place of retreat and refuge from the heated outside world. Warm earth tones from dark brown to cream transform them as an interior trend in 2022 – especially as a wall color – into an oasis of calm in which the mind can clear itself. The home trend is complemented by natural materials – something we can also observe in fashion, where many collections this year are dominated by knit and crochet creations. In concrete terms, this means knotted rugs, textiles made of natural cotton or linen, and home accessories made of seaweed or rattan meet pieces of furniture made of untreated wood. Dried flowers such as pampas grass serve as decoration – entirely in keeping with the neutral color palette.

A perfect play of past and future

The days of opulent interior design are over – at least for now. A look at the interior trends of the past few years reveals muted colors, clear shapes and a tidy look. Modern Traditional is also rather restrained and calm. Even if the name suggests it, it has little in common with the classic interior style. You will look in vain for rich colors, wild patterns, heavy fabrics and opulent accessories.

Mater Bowl Table

In its definition, Traditional Modern style is still quite open. It combines the calm restraint of the Scandy Style, original materials similar to the current Chinese design and the romanticism of the country house style. Its multifaceted nature is what makes the trend so special. The modern traditional style strives for functional furniture that is comfortable and simple, but by no means boring.

Organic shapes

White interior designs are going out of favour as people experiment with colour again. Shades of brown flood back the comforting warm ambience into our homes.

Attention to Sustainability and Craftsmanship

Mater Bowl Table

The Mater Bowl Table reconciles old Indian craftsmanship with the simplicity of Scandinavian design. The table top, made of sustainably sourced mango wood is turned on a lathe, showcasing the skill of Kharadi, an Indian wood turning community and supporting their local craftsmanship. The Bowl Table can stand alone or be paired as a side table vignette.

Organic Materials

Mater Low Stool and Accent Side Table

Combining an oak structure with a natural tanned leather upholstery, the organic yet minimalist style of this stool is suitable for both residential and commercial use.

Interplay between different materials and textures

The Array series is inspired by the wooden slate cladding found in modern architecture. With its geometric shape and horizontal slats, it creates a strong visual effect from catching both light and shadow in the depth of the slats. The sleek legs lift the sideboards from the ground creating an elegant contrast between the solid wooden cabinet on top and the thin metal construction underneath.

Decorative Objects

OYOY Tray

The Inka series is characterized by its simple design and clean lines which are especially reflected in this round tray. The round Inka Wood Tray is made of oak and the unique and natural structure will add warmth and soul to the home.

Kay Bojesen Walnut Horse

This Kay Bojesen first saw the light of day in the beginning of the 1930s. With its proud stance, luxurious mane and reins at the ready, the horse invites us on an imaginary journey at a brisk gallop. Its soft curves and stiff legs give the horse the typical expression Kay Bojesen’s wooden family of animals is known for: Playful contours that don’t try to reflect those of real animals, but imaginative variations instead, which quickly find a place in any home.
