The Intern, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, already in theatre today, impresses the audience with its stunning set design and décor. This much-anticipated new film is the creation of the Oscar-nominated Nancy Meyer, who in her role as a writer, producer and director is also responsible for the gorgeous set of the movie.
Telling the story of a Brooklyn-based fashion startup founder, immaculately played by Anne Hathaway, and her 70-year-old intern in the role of all time favourite De Niro, the story navigates the viewer through their ultra cool office in Red Hook as well as their full of character Cobble Hill homes. Nancy Meyer admits that she scouted for most of her inspiration on Pinterest. She created and communicated the “world” for each of the main characters, expressing their identity and personality through the design of their homes and the décor they were inhabiting. Through mood boards and further elaboration, along with her production and design team, they managed to achieve the stunning main sets of the movie, awakening the envy of every design devotee. In Nancy’s own words:
“It was a great way for everyone to just breathe in a little bit of the character’s essence and world they lived in.”
The style that Nancy Meyer wanted to achieve was minimalist, modern, with little ornamentation. The palette used throughout the set was subtle with natural fabrics a few occasional patterns to add dynamic to the décor. Even Hathaway admits that Meyer’s set designs always have interior everyone wants for their own. Mixing black and white photography along with a number of colourful drawings creates the authentic feel of the set.

A very curious fact is that in the home of the character played by De Niro, they adorned the space with the real paintings by Robert De Niro Sr. – whose art’s studio is established in New Your. In an interview De Niro shares that this ideas of Nancy meant a lot to him and helped him feel really at home on the set.

To set up an inspiring fashion site workplace, reflective of the current trends within the startup world, Meyer toured a number of tech and media startups to get the feel of their interior design and vibe. She realized that private offices are a thing of the past and she created an entire open plan floor to further enhance the natural features of the building – aged bricks and expansive windows welcoming tons of natural light.
